Academic Program:

What is an American Classical Leadership Education?
Our Core Values are what create our culture at Mountain Academy. Through the Art of Mentoring, the Classics and the Liberal Arts, scholars are enabled to discover truth. The scholar is invited to act on that truth and in the process, grows in wisdom.

It is by thoroughly engaging in the classics and by the examples of great mentors that a scholar is inspired to develop the virtue to do what is right. These are the necessary pillars for the cultivation of servant leadership of self-governing citizens who choose to serve, particularly in keeping and defending the principles of freedom throughout civil society.

We place a high emphasis on American history and the servant-leadership model from Jesus’s life & teaching.

How It Works

Scholars will be divided by grade levels and will receive instruction as a class using the Good and the Beautiful curriculum. (K-6th)

For example, all 3rd grade scholars would have their own classroom space together and will receive instruction together while having the flexibility to learn at their own pace.

We implement he Socratic Method based on asking & answering questions to stimulate critical thinking and to draw out ideas and underlying presuppositions. Scholars will have grade-level discussions and tasks to perform as a group, as well as assignments to complete individually. It is a highly interactive and robust online platform.

Scholars will have long breaks for plenty of outdoor playtime out in the sunshine and to create their own fun in a variety of activities available on the premises. Additionally, scholars will know that they can take breaks when needed and that we can be flexible in the learning environment in order to best suit each child’s needs.

Enrichment Programs

In addition to their Core Classes, scholars will have the opportunity to take part in a wide selection of enrichment programs each week provided by the staff & volunteers at Mountain Academy and other vetted community members. (Federal background checks & finger printing required for all volunteers). The list of enrichment programs will alternate year-round.

These programs vary from classical art to home-economics (sewing, basic accounting, home management, cleaning, cooking, baking) to gardening, preparing for the entrepreneur fair (the children make their own item/service, music, community service, typing, horseback riding, survival skill building, basics of building & engineering, forest management, basics of free market economics, science experiments, woodworking, crafts, leather working, plant identification & herbal remedies, etc.

Since Mountain Academy is a private non-denominational Christian school, many of the enrichment programs will include grade-level specific instruction in Christian worldview, apologetics and systematic theology. For example, in Kindergarten, that may look as simple as reading the creation story in the Bible, coloring a picture of it and then letting the children discuss the story as a group with their mentor who asks prompting questions. Next, they could learn about how humans were created in the image of God and how that makes us so special and valuable and why our lives have tremendous meaning and purpose.

For 7th & 8th grade, it could look like comparing the most common worldviews and highlighting their differences. Then scholars could have a socratic discussion about their merits and assumptions, employing logic and reason when assessing and/or defending the ideas presented.

We are so excited about all of these total courses that will equip our scholars with a wide variety of new skills and knowledge including that of a biblical worldview, with a deep understanding of who they are in Christ, and signifiant training in Christian apologetics.

The Culture at Mountain Academy

Prayer & Flag Ceremony
Scholars will arrive each day and we will gather together outside at the flag pole to pray together and to perform the daily flag ceremony.

Opening Rhythm
From there, students move into a cozy group story time which will include both a reading from the Bible as well as a story from one of the classics. The power of story & discussion is not to be underestimated!
